Calculate Australian CGTFrom broker records to your return
- Calculate the full 1 July–30 June year from the relevant acquisitions, sales and fund statements.
- Review the year’s results and download the supporting calculation pack.
- In myTax, include the relevant investment income and managed fund sections, then reconcile item 18 with the final annual figures.
- Keep the lodged return and evidence together.
Match the income year and records
The 2025–26 income year runs from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. Use the share contract date, include purchases from earlier years where needed, and add the annual fund statements for that same income year. The 2026 labels below have been checked against the supplementary return; later return layouts need checking when issued.

Understand H, A and V
18H is total current-year capital gains before losses and discounts. 18A is the net capital gain after those adjustments. 18V is the unused net capital loss carried forward. A net capital gain is included in taxable income; it is not the tax payable.
The paper return uses whole dollars for these amounts. Keep cents in the underlying workings and drop them only for the final labels. If losses reduce the net gain to nil, follow the paper instructions to leave A blank rather than entering a negative gain.

Enter each managed fund once
Use Managed fund distributions in myTax for the statement’s components. Fund capital gains feed the overall CGT total. Reconcile that carry-over with personal sales so the fund’s gain is included once, not added a second time as another sale.

Check whether the CGT schedule is required
For an individual lodging in myTax, a CGT schedule is generally required when total current-year capital gains or total current-year capital losses exceed $10,000. The test uses gross gains or losses, not only the discounted net gain. Follow any additional prompts that apply to your return.
Keep the calculation with your lodged return
Download the parcel workings, source records and final annual figures. FiscalFox prepares calculation records; it does not lodge your return. Check the ATO’s due date shown for your circumstances, especially if using a tax agent.

Worked example: amounts for item 18
Synthetic current-rule example: $10,000 discount-eligible gain and $2,000 current-year capital loss, with no prior losses.
| Calculation | AUD or result |
|---|---|
| 18H: total current-year capital gains | $10,000 |
| Losses applied before discount | $2,000 |
| CGT discount applied | $4,000 |
| 18A: net capital gain | $4,000 |
| 18V: unused net capital losses | $0 |
Questions and answers
Do I halve the FiscalFox net capital gain again in myTax?
No. The net capital gain already reflects the applicable losses and discount. Applying the discount again would understate it.
Does a loss-only year mean I can ignore capital gains reporting?
A disposal at a loss is still a CGT event. Record the event and the unused net capital loss for later years, following the return instructions.
Is the net capital gain my tax bill?
No. It is an amount included in taxable income. Your overall tax calculation depends on other income, offsets and your circumstances.
