The broker records your CGT calculation needs

A capital gains calculation is only as complete as the records behind it. Most investors need more than one file, and some purchases never appear in a broker's export.

Download from every broker, from the first purchase

Each sale needs the purchases of the parcels it used, however long ago they were. Download the trade history from every broker you've used, starting from the first purchase of anything you sold or still hold. Year-end statements often show only that year, so a full trade history is usually the better file. The steps for each broker are on our broker downloads page.

    Records brokers leave out

Shares held directly with a company's share registry (issuer sponsored), shares from a dividend reinvestment plan, and shares received in a demerger or as an employee often don't appear in a broker's trade history. Your share registry statements show them. Shares transferred from another broker keep their original purchase date and cost, so you need that broker's records too.

Splits, consolidations, returns of capital and takeovers change your parcels without a trade. The company's announcements on the ASX show the dates and ratios.

    Keep the originals

Keep the files you downloaded and the statements behind any figures you entered. The ATO's general rule is to keep investment records for five years after it has processed your return. For shares that means the return for the year you sell, so the record of a purchase is kept for as long as you hold the shares and for five years after.

    Questions and answers

Does a transfer to another broker give me a new purchase price?

Moving the same beneficially owned shares between your own brokers generally does not reset their acquisition date or cost base. Keep both sides of the transfer and the original purchase evidence.

Is this year’s broker export enough?

It is enough only when it includes the acquisition and subsequent adjustments for every parcel needed by that year’s sales. Earlier purchases and registry records may also be needed.
