Where the CGT hours go
The CGT figures are the easy part. Turning a pile of broker exports into the Section 104 working behind them is where the time disappears.
Section 104 by hand, client after client
A pooled, by-asset working paper with same-day and 30-day matching can take the better part of an evening per client in a spreadsheet, and every one is staff time you can't bill back at cost.
Messy exports eat the morning
Every platform names things differently and few include ISINs. Mapping securities by hand across IG, HL, Trading 212 and the rest is slow, repetitive and easy to get wrong under deadline pressure.
Your tax software doesn't pool
TaxCalc, CCH, IRIS and Capium take the CGT figures. They don't turn a pile of broker exports into the Section 104 pool working behind them. That gap is where the manual hours go.
Everything a firm needs, nothing it doesn't
In minutes, upload to report pack
Drop in the broker files and the pool-based working papers come back ready to review. For typical cases the job that fills an evening in a spreadsheet clears in minutes, so the size of your client book stops dictating how long CGT season takes.
Pool-based working papers, by asset type
SA108 figures grouped by asset type, the Section 104 pool ledger with running balances, Closing Pool Balances and Corporate Actions Applied, laid out the way accountants are taught to review by-asset workings, and traceable line by line in a file review.
Deterministic HMRC engine you can inspect
Same-day (s.105), 30-day bed and breakfast (s.106A) and Section 104 pooling are applied in the correct statutory order, the same way every time: a rules-based engine you can inspect, not a black box. Review flags surface anything that needs your judgement.
Carry-forward that compounds the saving
Each client's closing Section 104 balances are saved and roll forward in one click to seed next year's opening positions. For returning clients you never re-upload years of history, so the first season sets a client up and every season after starts from work already banked.
Cross-broker pooling and joint splits
The same security held across two platforms is pooled into one Section 104 calculation, so the gain reflects the full pooled position rather than being understated. Jointly-held portfolios can be split by ownership share, for example 50%.
Process the book as a team
Invite staff with owner, admin or staff roles and split the client book across the desk. Each client's data, uploads and reports are scoped to that case with row-level security and never mixed; only owners and admins touch billing.
Three steps per client
The same reliable workflow for every client in your book.
Add a client
A name or your internal reference is all you need. Set the tax year and ownership share for jointly-held portfolios.
Upload broker files
Drop in CSV, Excel or PDF exports from any broker. We resolve securities, apply HMRC matching, and flag anything needing review.
Export the pack
Download the accountant report pack: SA108 figures, pool workings and closing balances, labelled with the client's name and reference.
Next year, you only touch this year's trades
FiscalFox saves each client's closing Section 104 balances as the traceable record of where the pool ended. Roll a client forward and those become next year's opening positions automatically, so returning clients take minutes, not a fresh rebuild of their history, and there's no question over where the opening figure came from. Clients you take on mid-history start from a simple manual opening-positions file.
- Closing pool balances saved per client, year over year
- One-click roll to the next tax year
- Opening positions seeded automatically, with no re-uploading history
- Manual opening-positions file for clients migrated mid-history
Simple firm pricing
Priced per client case with an upload allowance, not per transaction. Monthly or annual (annual = 2 months free). Start free, upgrade when you're ready.
Allowances are caps you free by archiving finished cases, not annual resets. Individual investors can still calculate their own CGT.
Faster than your current process
A specialist CGT add-on that sits beside your tax software, not another suite to learn.
Per client, upload to report pack
Error-prone, hard to defend in review
Long setup, priced like a full platform
Defensible by design
- Calculations follow TCGA 1992 share matching: same-day (s.105), 30-day bed & breakfast (s.106A), and Section 104 pooling, applied in the correct order.
- Outputs align with HMRC Capital Gains Manual guidance (CG51560, CG51550, CG15800) and the SA108 box structure.
- A deterministic engine with review flags and an audit trail. Every disposal is traceable back to the pool movements that produced it.
- Client data is isolated per firm and per client, with row-level security on every record.
Firm FAQ
How is this different from individual FiscalFox?
Same deterministic engine, wrapped in a practice workspace. You manage many clients, each with isolated cases and tax years, carry balances forward between years, invite your team, and export an accountant-grade report pack instead of paying the individual one-off per client.
Do clients upload their own files?
No. You add the client and upload their broker exports yourself, the way most firms already work. There's no client portal to manage in the MVP, so you stay in control of the data.
Can I process multiple tax years?
Yes. Each client can have a case per tax year, and rolling a client forward seeds the new year's opening Section 104 positions from the prior year's closing balances automatically.
What happens if I exceed my plan?
Plans include a set number of client cases and an upload allowance. Archiving a finished case frees a slot, and you can upgrade in-app at any time. Switching plans changes your existing subscription rather than starting a new one.
Is FiscalFox tax advice?
No. FiscalFox produces CGT working papers and SA108 figures from the data you provide. Professional judgement and the final filing remain with you and your client.
