If you are UK resident and trade through Futu (Futubull) or moomoo, your gains are taxed in the UK even though Hong Kong has no capital gains tax. Choose Futu / moomoo in FiscalFox and upload the Orders export from the app. FiscalFox reads it in your browser, counts only the shares that filled, includes every fee as an allowable cost, converts each trade to pounds at its own date’s rate, and applies the UK same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules.
What FiscalFox does with your Futu files
- Reads the Orders export as it comes. No reformatting or template needed. Futu files are also recognised if you upload them under Other broker.
- Counts what filled, not what you ordered. Quantity and price come from the Filled@Avg Price column. Cancelled and failed orders are skipped, and a partly filled order counts only its filled shares.
- Includes every charge. Commission, platform fee, settlement fee, stamp duty, trading fee, SFC levy and FRC levy are added up for each order and checked against Futu’s Total.
- Uses the real fill date when you add History Transactions. Each order is matched to its fills, so the trade is counted once with the fill date and the order’s fees.
- Combines Futu with your other brokers. Shares of the same company held elsewhere are pooled and matched together.
UK tax on a Hong Kong or US account
UK residents pay capital gains tax on disposals anywhere in the world, so it makes no difference that your Futu or moomoo account is outside the UK or that Hong Kong does not tax the gain.
Shares bought and sold on the same day are matched first under the same-day rule (TCGA 1992 s105). Next, shares bought in the 30 days after a sale are matched under the 30-day rule (TCGA 1992 s106A). Everything else comes from the average cost of your Section 104 pool. Active traders in Hong Kong small caps hit the first two rules often, so a spreadsheet of buy price against sell price usually gives the wrong answer.
Hong Kong and US dollars to pounds
Convert the cost at the exchange rate on the purchase date and the proceeds at the rate on the sale date. Never work out the gain in dollars and convert that. HMRC’s CG78310 sets this out. FiscalFox applies a dated reference rate to each transaction and shows the rate it used, for HKD, USD and the other currencies Futu trades in. Our guide to exchange rates shows how a profit in dollars can still be a loss in pounds.
Orders or History Transactions?
Futu offers two trade exports, and each is missing something the other has.
| Export | Has | Missing |
|---|---|---|
| Orders | Filled quantity, average fill price, every fee and levy | The time each order filled (it shows when it was placed) |
| History Transactions | Every fill with its time | Fees |
| Funding Details | Cash movements | Share quantities, so it cannot be used |
Upload Orders on its own and you get every cost. A few orders may be held for review if they were good-till-cancelled or placed after the close, because they could have filled on a later day. FiscalFox only holds one when that day could change the result. Upload History Transactions for the same dates as well and those holds clear, with each trade counted once.
How to export your Futu or moomoo trades
Menu names differ between the Futu and moomoo apps and between regions, so these steps describe what to download rather than every tap.
- Choose the account: Open the Futu (Futubull) or moomoo app and select the securities account you traded in. A margin account and a universal account are exported separately.
- Export the Orders history: Open the account's order history and export it as a CSV. Its columns include Side, Symbol, Status, Filled@Avg Price, Order Time and the fees.
- Pick the full date range: Start from your first purchase of anything you sold, and run through 5 May after the tax year ends, so the 30-day rule can see later purchases.
- Add History Transactions for the same dates: Also export History Transactions, which lists every fill with the time it filled. It is optional, but it gives each trade its real fill date.
- Upload both under Futu / moomoo: In the FiscalFox calculator choose Futu / moomoo and upload the files unchanged. Each trade is counted once, dated from History Transactions with the fees from Orders.
Already made your own spreadsheet?
You do not need it. Upload the export from the app unchanged: FiscalFox reads Futu’s own columns, including the fees. If a spreadsheet re-save dropped the leading zeros from Hong Kong codes (1667 instead of 01667), FiscalFox puts them back.
What is not included yet
- Options. Option trades in a Futu export are set aside and not calculated.
- Called or expired warrants and CBBCs. Hong Kong warrants and callable bull/bear contracts you sold are treated like shares. One that was called early or expired leaves no sale in the export, so check it separately.
- Dividends. The Orders and History Transactions exports list trades only.
Upload and price
- Open the FiscalFox calculator with Futu / moomoo selected.
- Upload your Orders export, and History Transactions for the same dates if you have it. Add files from your other brokers too.
- Check the same-day, 30-day and Section 104 workings for each sale, then use the totals on the capital gains pages of your return. Our SA108 guide shows where each figure goes.
Calculating is free. The report pack for a tax year costs £39.99, paid once, the same as for any other broker.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay UK capital gains tax on shares in a Hong Kong Futu account?
Yes, if you are UK resident. Hong Kong does not tax capital gains, but UK residents pay UK capital gains tax on gains made anywhere, including in a Futu or moomoo account. Each sale is worked out in pounds under the same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules, the same as at a UK broker.
Which Futu export should I use: Orders or History Transactions?
Orders, if you only use one. It lists every charge on each order (commission, platform fee, settlement fee, stamp duty and levies), and those costs reduce your gain. History Transactions has no fees, but it records when each fill happened. Uploading both for the same dates gives you the fees and the real fill dates, and each trade is counted once.
Why are some of my Futu sales held for review?
The Orders export shows when an order was placed, not when it filled. A good-till-cancelled order, or one placed after the market closed, may have filled on a later day. FiscalFox only holds it when that unknown day could change the result, such as a matching purchase within 30 days or a fill that could fall either side of 5 April. Upload History Transactions for the same dates, or edit the trade with its fill date, to clear it.
Are cancelled and part-filled orders counted?
Cancelled and failed orders are skipped. A partly filled order counts only the shares that filled, at the average fill price Futu shows in Filled@Avg Price, never the quantity or limit price you ordered.
How are Hong Kong dollars and US dollars converted to pounds?
Each side of the trade on its own date: the cost at the exchange rate on the purchase date and the proceeds at the rate on the sale date, as HMRC's CG78310 sets out. FiscalFox applies a dated reference rate to each transaction and shows the rate it used. It never converts a gain worked out in dollars.
Can FiscalFox read the Futu Funding Details export?
No. Funding Details is a cash statement without share quantities, so it cannot show what you bought and sold. Upload the Orders or History Transactions export instead.
How much does a Futu or moomoo capital gains report cost?
Calculating is free. The report pack for a tax year costs £39.99, paid once, the same as for any other broker, and you can combine Futu with your other brokers in one calculation.
