Most crypto tax software was built for the US, where you pick a method such as FIFO or HIFO. HMRC gives you no choice. Every sale is matched with tokens of the same type bought on the same day, then with tokens bought in the next 30 days, and only then with a pool at average cost (CRYPTO22200). A tool that gets this order wrong gives you a confident, wrong number. This page checks six tools against those rules and gives you a test that shows the difference in one sale.

What UK crypto tax software has to do

    • Apply the three matching rules, in order. Same day, then 30 days, then the Section 104 pool, separately for each token. The same rules apply to shares as the same-day rule, the 30-day rule and the Section 104 pool.
    • Value everything in pounds, including token-to-token swaps, which are disposals in their own right (HMRC guidance).
    • Report by UK tax year, 6 April to 5 April, not the calendar year.
    • Give you the SA108 figures. From 2024/25 crypto has its own section, boxes 13.1 to 13.8 (SA108 2026).
    • Separate income from gains. Staking, mining and some airdrops are income, taxed differently from disposals.

    The four-trade test

Every tool on this page offers a free preview, a trial or a money-back period before you commit. Enter these four trades and look at the gain on the day 20 sale. Each method gives a different answer, so the number tells you what the tool is really doing.

    The four-trade test

Enter these trades in a tool's free preview. The gain it shows on the day 20 sale tells you which method it uses.

    1. Day 1

      Buy 1 BTC

      £10,000

    2. Day 10

      Buy 1 BTC

      £20,000

    3. Day 20

      Sell 1 BTC

      £25,000

    4. Day 30

      Buy 1 BTC

      £22,000

Method the tool usesCost matchedGain on the sale
HMRC rules (30-day rule matches the day 30 buy)£22,000£3,000
Average cost only (pool of day 1 and day 10)£15,000£10,000
    FIFO (first in, first out)£10,000£15,000
    HIFO (highest cost first)£20,000£5,000

Under HMRC's rules the day 20 sale is matched with the day 30 purchase, because it falls within 30 days after the sale, so the cost is £22,000 and the gain is £3,000. We ran the same trades through FiscalFox's share matching engine, which applies the identical rules, and got £3,000. A tool that shows £10,000 is pooling without the 30-day rule. One that shows £15,000 is using FIFO.

    Koinly

Koinly says it supports "Share Pooling" for the UK, "including same-day and bed-and-breakfasting rules" (koinly.io/gb), and its UK report includes an HMRC Capital Gains Summary plus a Capital Gains CSV with one line per matched portion (Koinly tax reports). Importing and previewing is free; you pay per tax year to download reports. It connects to over 900 exchanges and wallets. It is also the only tool here whose report FiscalFox imports, so if you hold shares as well, your crypto and share gains end up on one SA108. Read our Koinly review for UK investors for what the report contains and the settings to check. Try Koinly (Ad)

    Recap

Recap is UK-based and focused on HMRC rules. It says its reports apply "Section 104 pooling and the same-day and 30-day matching rules" (recap.io), prices in pounds and has a portal for accountants with several clients. It is billed annually rather than per tax year, starting at £119 for up to 5,000 transactions, with no free plan but a 30-day money-back promise (Recap pricing). CSV exports need the Pro plan.

    Blockpit

Blockpit says its calculator applies all three HMRC methods, and its UK guide is the only vendor guide we found that already uses the current SA108 boxes, 13.1 to 13.8 (Blockpit UK guide). Reports are a one-off purchase per tax year, from €49, with PDF and CSV export (Blockpit pricing).

    Coinpanda

Coinpanda lists the UK method as "Share Pool - incl. the same-day and 30-day rule" (Coinpanda help). It produces a complete tax report and a capital gains CSV, but its list of country-specific forms has no UK form (Coinpanda reports), so you copy the totals onto the SA108 yourself. Plans start at $79.

    CoinLedger

CoinLedger's help centre gives the UK method only as "Shared Pool" (CoinLedger help). Its UK guide explains the same-day and 30-day rules, but we found no statement that the software applies them. Viewing gains is free and reports start at $49. This is the tool where the four-trade test matters most: if it shows £10,000, the 30-day rule is missing.

    CoinTracking

CoinTracking's UK guide describes same-day, 30-day and Section 104 matching (CoinTracking UK guide). The free plan has no tax reports, and paid plans count transactions across all years, not one tax year (CoinTracking pricing), which matters if you have traded for a long time.

Before you copy figures onto the SA108

    • Check the box numbers. Several vendors' own filing guides still quote boxes 14 to 19. From 2024/25 those are Other property, assets and gains. Crypto goes in 13.1 to 13.8.
    • Add your crypto held at brokers. If you bought crypto on eToro or another broker, connect that account too, or its sales are missing from the totals.
    • Clear the missing cost warnings. A sale with no purchase found is usually a transfer from a wallet you have not connected. Left alone, the whole proceeds count as gain.
    • Combine with your shares. The £3,000 annual exempt amount and your losses apply to crypto and shares together, not to each separately (rates and allowances).

    If you also sold shares

Crypto tax software works out crypto. It does not read your Trading 212, Hargreaves Lansdown or Interactive Brokers history. Rather than add up two reports by hand, upload your broker files to FiscalFox and add your Koinly Capital Gains Report next to them. FiscalFox applies the same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules to your shares, reports each Koinly crypto line as Koinly matched it, and gives you one SA108 schedule for both. See crypto and shares on one SA108 for how it works.

Crypto and shares in one report

Upload your broker exports to the free calculator, then add your Koinly Capital Gains Report. The calculation is free.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best crypto tax software in the UK?

The one that applies HMRC's same-day, 30-day and Section 104 rules to your own transactions and connects to every exchange and wallet you used. Koinly, Recap, Blockpit and Coinpanda all say they apply the three rules. Check any tool with the four-trade test before paying: the correct gain is £3,000. If you also hold shares, Koinly is the one whose report FiscalFox can import, so crypto and shares end up on one SA108.

Can I use FIFO for crypto in the UK?

No. HMRC does not allow FIFO, LIFO or HIFO for individuals. Disposals are matched first with tokens of the same type bought on the same day, then with tokens bought in the following 30 days, and anything left comes from a Section 104 pool at average cost (HMRC Cryptoassets Manual CRYPTO22200).

Do I need to report crypto if I made no gain?

For 2023/24 onwards, you must report on the SA108 if your total disposal proceeds were over £50,000 or your gains were over the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for 2024/25 and 2025/26), even if no tax is due. A swap from one token to another counts as a disposal.

Where does crypto go on the tax return?

From 2024/25, the SA108 has a Cryptoassets section, boxes 13.1 to 13.8: number of disposals, proceeds, allowable costs, gains, losses, a claim code and two boxes for gains already reported through the real time service. Some vendors' filing guides still quote boxes 14 to 19, which are now Other property, assets and gains.

    Can FiscalFox calculate my crypto?

FiscalFox does not calculate crypto from exchange trades. It imports the Koinly Capital Gains Report and adds those gains to your share gains, with one annual exempt amount and one set of losses across both. Reports from other crypto tools are not imported yet.
